{"id":7827,"date":"2022-06-30T17:04:38","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T16:04:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&#038;p=7827"},"modified":"2024-07-11T09:56:53","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T08:56:53","slug":"rim-weighting","status":"publish","type":"epkb_post_type_1","link":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/rim-weighting\/","title":{"rendered":"RIM weighting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>RIM weighting is used when you wish to provide weighting for more than one variable to achieve an even distribution of results across an entire dataset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also be used to produce an analysis in which the proportion of respondents in your sample is adjusted to match more closely to the proportion in the target population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  For example, if you wished to weight your samples so that they were 50% male and 50% female, and also 20% in each of five age brackets, the algorithm would calculate the correct&nbsp;weighting&nbsp;that needed to be applied to each table entry (combining age and gender).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  RIM weighting works best for single response variables where there is no missing data, and the counts or percentages are similar to the existing data responses.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  It is not a good idea to use&nbsp;rim-weighting&nbsp;if:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    Your variables are related to each other (for example, income bracket and dwelling size).\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    The values vary enormously (for example, you have 96 males and four females, and you are attempting to balance it to 50:50).\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    You are applying a very large number of weights.\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a RIM Weight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n  In the <strong>Survey Overview<\/strong> window, open the survey.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>   Click <strong>Analysis Variables<\/strong>    <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-7828\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/word-image-7827-1.png\">    on the Snap XMP Desktop toolbar. This opens the Analysis Variables window which displays a list of the analysis variables. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  Click <strong>New Analysis Variables Item<\/strong> \n  <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/word-image-7827-2.png\" class=\"wp-image-7829\">\n   on the Analysis Variables toolbar. This displays a menu of analysis variables to choose from.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>   Click <strong>New RIM Weight<\/strong>. This opens the RIM Weight window. Note there is an initial error in the status bar as there are no variables references yet. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"446\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-3.png\" alt=\"Graphical user interface, text, application, email\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-7830\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-3.png 576w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/graphical-user-interface-text-application-email-3-300x232.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\">\n<li>   In <strong>Name<\/strong>, enter a name which describes the RIM weight. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>   In <strong>Label<\/strong>, enter a description of the RIM weight. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Target total<\/strong>, select the required option.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Missing data<\/strong>, there are two choices: exclude partial cases or include partial cases. Excluding the partial cases provides the most accurate result as the partial cases have missing data in their responses. The default is exclude partial cases. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Filter<\/strong>, enter a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/filter-expressions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filter expression<\/a> to create the RIM weight for a subset of the response data. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Add Variable<\/strong>    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-7831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/word-image-7827-4.png\">     to open the Select variable dialog.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"582\" height=\"421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/table-description-automatically-generated.png\" alt=\"Table\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-7833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/table-description-automatically-generated.png 582w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/table-description-automatically-generated-300x217.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 582px) 100vw, 582px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"11\">\n<li>Select a variable from the Name drop-down as the weighting variable. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"287\" height=\"125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SelectVariable.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8901\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"12\">\n<li>Click OK. This displays default values for the RIM weight in the grid . The grid shows the ratio, expected count and percentage as well as the actual count and percentage. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click in the <strong>Ratio<\/strong> column to change the ratio or target number depending on the <strong>Target total<\/strong> option selected. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat for all the variables you wish to add. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you wish to remove variables, select a variable in the grid then click <strong>Delete Variable<\/strong>    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-7832\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/word-image-7827-5.png\">    to delete the variable. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Save <\/strong>   <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-7834\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/word-image-7827-7.png\">    to save the RIM weight. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Target Totals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three options for setting the Target total: <strong>Valid cases<\/strong>, <strong>From targets<\/strong> and <strong>Custom<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Valid cases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Valid cases<\/strong> bases the RIM weight on the valid data responses in the survey. The default ratio is 1 to give an equal distribution for all variable codes. The <strong>Ratio<\/strong> column can be changed with a proportion or target number for each variable code. For a target number to be used the total numbers in the Ratio column (per variable) must add up to the number of valid cases, otherwise a proportional ratio is used. The <strong>Expected <\/strong>column shows the target counts. This is set in the <strong>Ratio <\/strong>column. The target number is available next to the drop down and is the count of the target number for each variable code in the Ratio column. Selecting this option enables the field next to the drop-down where you can enter the target number.  The default ratio is 1 which shows an equal distribution of the target number split across all the codes within each variable. The target number can be edited in the Ratio column. Click OK to close the summary. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Errors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>   If there is an error in the RIM weight the status bar will show an error message. Clicking <strong>Assess RIM Weight<\/strong>    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-7837\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/word-image-7827-10.png\">    also shows an error message. When the RIM Weight is created the status shows as Not built. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n  Click <strong>Build RIM Weight <\/strong>\n  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/word-image-7827-11.png\" class=\"wp-image-7838\">\n   on the RIM Weight toolbar to build the RIM weight.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  The Status changes to show Built. If there is an error in the RIM weight the status bar will show an error message and the RIM weight is not built.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  Click <strong>Save <\/strong>\n  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/word-image-7827-12.png\" class=\"wp-image-7839\">\n   to save the RIM weight.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the RIM Weight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The RIM weight can be included when creating analyses.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>   Click the required analysis icon on the Snap XMP Desktop toolbar.
