When you create a question in&nbsp;<strong>Design<\/strong>&nbsp;mode you create a variable used in all editions of the survey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Showing variable properties in the Questionnaire window<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n  Each variable has a set of individual properties. The properties depend on the type of question. If you have selected several questions of the same type, you can change any properties they share.\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Properties for all questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><p><strong>Property<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><td><p><strong>Description<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Name\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Name of the variable you currently have selected, for example: Q1\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Lock Name\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  When set to Yes this stops the variable being renumbered\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Label\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  This&nbsp;is a full description of the variable&nbsp;that will appear in the data entry and on all analysis reports. By default, this displays the editable variable grid label in grids and semantic scales or as the question text in other question styles.\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Text\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Displays the editable question text\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Response\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>   Response types shown will depend on the question style selected. The response will determine the number of replies that are possible and the way in which they are recorded when data entry is completed. <strong>Single: <\/strong>allow only one answer to be selected <strong>Multiple<\/strong>: allow more than one answer <strong>Quantity: <\/strong>accept numerical answers <strong>Date: <\/strong>accept suitable date formats, e.g., dd\/mm\/yy <strong>Time:<\/strong> accept suitable time formats, e.g., 2.30pm <strong>Literal: <\/strong>allow<strong> <\/strong>any text <\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Must answer\n<\/p><\/td><td><p><strong>Yes<\/strong>&nbsp;forces this question to be asked during data entry.&nbsp;<strong>No<\/strong>&nbsp;allows the question to be kept blank\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Not asked\n<\/p><\/td><td><p><strong>Not Asked<\/strong>&nbsp;conditions are set to assist with the routing in a questionnaire and with survey analysis, by excluding certain categories of respondents\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Initial value\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  A default value that will be displayed during the interview or data entry. If read only is set then this can be an expression defining a calculated value.\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Read only\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  When set to <strong>Yes<\/strong>, prevents the respondents from setting the answer\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Aria role\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Assign a custom role to the question in the published output to improve accessibility\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Properties for closed questions only<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><p><strong>Property<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><td><p><strong>Description<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Code count\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>   The number of codes in the variable. <\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Ordering\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Select the ordering method to use when rotating codes or grid as data is being entered. Only applies to questions with a fixed list of responses.\n<\/p><p><strong>Inverse<\/strong>: question codes alternate between each case in normal and reverse order\n<\/p><p><strong>Forward<\/strong>: codes appear in the same order but always start forward one\n<\/p><p><strong>Random<\/strong>: codes appear in a random order\n<\/p><p><strong>Alphabetic<\/strong>: codes appear in alphabetical order\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>\n  Ordering exclude\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Specify the codes that are excluded from ordering. The default for Min is 0.
