You can then analyse the answers to these questions to see if people are generally satisfied or dissatisfied, so you are more able to judge where to put the effort in to improve what you offer.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  For example, here are five rating questions with a five point scale.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"641\" height=\"263\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/table-description-automatically-generated-3.png\" alt=\"Table\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-7368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/table-description-automatically-generated-3.png 641w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/table-description-automatically-generated-3-300x123.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  You could use the responses to these questions to help you judge whether you should invest in a larger parking lot or better food.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  This tutorial explains some of the issues about using the data as it stands and describes how to set up a three-column table and a simple bar chart to display whether people are generally satisfied or not.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-7367-o26215\"><\/a>Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  When you are looking at the responses, you need to be careful that you know what is being counted, and that you compare like with like.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  For example, how do you compare people\u2019s satisfaction with parking and cleanliness if forty people answer your questionnaire:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    ten people answer the parking question, of whom eight select <strong>Good<\/strong>\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    forty people answer the cleanliness question, of whom twenty select <strong>Good<\/strong>.\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  To make the comparison useful, you could:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    ignore the people who haven\u2019t responded, and compare the percentage of people who responded who think it is good (in this case 80% think parking is good while 50% think cleanliness is good).\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    count the people who hadn\u2019t responded as neutral, and then compare the percentages (20% of all respondents think parking is good while 50% think cleanliness is good)\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  You need to then display your conclusions clearly.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  Here are some of the ways you could display the rating data in tables.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Look at the responses in detail with a grid table<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  This tells you how many people and what percentage of people, selected which answer to which question. You can find more information about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/creating-grid-table\/\">creating grid tables<\/a>.\n  <br>\n  <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"621\" height=\"358\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/table-description-automatically-generated-4.png\" class=\"wp-image-7369\" alt=\"Table\n\nDescription automatically generated\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/table-description-automatically-generated-4.png 621w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/table-description-automatically-generated-4-300x173.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compare the questions as a whole<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    You could use confidence boxes to group the <strong>Poor<\/strong> and <strong>Very poor<\/strong> responses together as <strong>Negative<\/strong>, and the <strong>Good<\/strong> and <strong>Very good<\/strong> responses together as <strong>Positive<\/strong> and see which question scored highest on <strong>Negative<\/strong> or <strong>Positive<\/strong> responses. One of the clearest ways of showing this is to give the responses a score ranging from negative to positive. The rating scale questions in the Crocodile Rock Cafe survey are questions Q6.a to Q6.e. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-7367-o26184\"><\/a>Step 1: Create derived variables for the three columns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>   You need to create a new variable with 3 codes that represent each five-point rating scale to a three-point rating scale: Positive, OK and Negative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create the new variable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>       Click <strong>Variables<\/strong>        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-7373\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/word-image-44.png\">       \u00a0on the Snap XMP Desktop toolbar to open the <strong>Variables <\/strong>window.     <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>       Click <strong>New Variable<\/strong>        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/word-image-45.png\" class=\"wp-image-7374\">       &nbsp;on the <strong>Variables <\/strong>window toolbar to create a new variable.     <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>       Set the <strong>Name <\/strong>to <strong>ThreePointV6a <\/strong>to remind you that it is a three-point rating scale derived from <strong>Q6.a<\/strong>.     <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>       Set the <strong>Type <\/strong>to <strong>Derived<\/strong>. (The values in this variable are derived from the answers to the rating scale questions.)     <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>       Set the <strong>Label <\/strong>to <strong>Speed of service<\/strong>.     <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>       Set the <strong>Response <\/strong>to <strong>Single<\/strong>.     <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create the code list<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>       Click in the <strong>Label <\/strong>area for code <strong>1<\/strong> and type <strong>Negative<\/strong>. This is going to be the heading of the column in your analysis.     <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>       Click Tab to move to the <strong>Values <\/strong>column.     <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>       Enter an expression to select the <strong>Poor <\/strong>or <strong>Very poor<\/strong> responses to the rating question. In this example, these are the responses 1 <strong>(Very poor<\/strong>) and 2 (<strong>Poor<\/strong>). The expression that selects these responses to the appropriate question (Q6a in this example) is <strong>Q6a=(1,2)<\/strong>.
