{"id":6218,"date":"2021-07-16T12:01:23","date_gmt":"2021-07-16T11:01:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&#038;p=6218"},"modified":"2023-10-05T15:51:03","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T14:51:03","slug":"translating-your-survey","status":"publish","type":"epkb_post_type_1","link":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/translating-your-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"Translating your survey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a id=\"post-6218-o27418\"><\/a>   There are several ways of translating surveys in Snap XMP Desktop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    You can write the translation yourself (create a new language edition, and type in the translation)\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    You can use an external translator (create a text file to be translated, and import the translated file)\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    You can use pre-translated questions (create all the language editions that you need, and add a question that already has translations)\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>     Use Snap XMP Desktop to automatically translate all the questions it recognises using reference questions (open the reference window and then use the Translation Wizard).   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  If you use standard questions, you can add them to a multi-lingual SurveyPak, and then re-use them in other surveys, either by adding them directly to a multi-lingual questionnaire, or using the automatic translation facility.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  This tutorial explains how to export a file to send to an external translator and re-import the translated text to create a bilingual survey. The example uses a translation from English to Spanish.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-6218-o27421\"><\/a><a id=\"post-6218-o27422\"><\/a>Step 1: Exporting the original version of your survey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  These steps assume that you have created your questionnaire in one language before you start.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>   In the Survey Overview window, click <strong>Questionnaire<\/strong>    <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"27\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-6219\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/questionnaireicon-png.png\" alt=\"QuestionnaireIcon.png\">    to open the survey in the Questionnaire window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  Select <strong>File|Translation<\/strong> to display the <strong>Translation Wizard<\/strong> dialog.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  In Action, select <strong>Prepare External Translation<\/strong>. \n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"445\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/translation1-png.png\" alt=\"Translation1.PNG\" class=\"wp-image-6220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/translation1-png.png 445w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/translation1-png-300x237.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li>\n  Click <strong>Next<\/strong>. In <strong>Export<\/strong>, select <strong>Reference file<\/strong> <strong>only&nbsp;<\/strong>to create a list of the phrases that need translating. If you already have translated some of the questions, export to a <strong>Reference with a matched translation<\/strong>. This creates two files, one with the list of text to be translated, and one with the list of texts that have been translated (with gaps for untranslated text).\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"445\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/translation2-png.png\" alt=\"Translation2.PNG\" class=\"wp-image-6221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/translation2-png.png 445w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/translation2-png-300x237.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\">\n<li>\n  Make a note of the <strong>File name&nbsp;<\/strong>you use so you can find it later. Check the <strong>Omit repeated content<\/strong> box to leave out phrases that are used in multiple places (for example, ratings questions might all have the same possible answers).\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  Click <strong>Start<\/strong> to generate your file. When the export has completed, you will be given a brief report. If you want to keep a copy of the report, click<strong> Send To<\/strong> to save it to a file.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  Click<strong> OK <\/strong>to close the window.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-6218-o27425\"><\/a>Step 2: Sending the file to the translator<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  You now have a text file that you can send to your translator. They need to produce a translated file that matches the file that the translation wizard has produced. It needs to have the same number of lines and the same instructions to the translation wizard. These should not be translated. It also needs to be a plain text file (not a Word document).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The instructions are used to describe the question, and are all in capitals. For example, a section of the questionnaire appears in the file like this\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">START\nNOTE 2 (ref:N2)\nAbout Yourself \nNOTE 3 (ref:N3) \nPlease spend a few moments filling in this questionnaire. SUMMARY \nSpend a few moments filling in questionnaire \nNOTE 4 (ref:N4) \nPlease read each question carefully and tick a box to indicate your answer. \nSUMMARY \nRead each question carefully \nQUESTION 5 (ref:Q1) \nAre you male or female? \nSUMMARY \nRespondent gender \nANSWER \nMale \nFemale <\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  You would ask your translator to translate the phrases between the lines in capitals. Their translation would look something like this.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">START\nNOTE 2 (ref:N2)\nSobre Usted\nNOTE 3 (ref:N3)\nPor favor, dedique unos instantes a rellenar este cuestionario.\nSUMMARY\nDedique unos instantes a rellenar este cuestionario\nNOTE 4 (ref:N4)\nPor favor, lea detenidamente cada pregunta y marque una casilla para indicar su respuesta.\nSUMMARY\nLea detenidamente cada pregunta\nQUESTION 5 (ref:Q1)\n\u00bfEs usted hombre o mujer?\nSUMMARY\nG\u00e9nero\nANSWER\nHombre\nMujer\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The generated translation file starts with a set of notes for the translator\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    please translate between \u2018START\u2019 and \u2018END\u2019\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    please do not translate START, END, TOPIC, NOTE, QUESTION, SUMMARY, ANSWER, FOOTNOTE, LANGUAGE: , etc.\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    please do not add or remove lines\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    Un-translatable questions may be removed provided the declaration line is left (and only this line)\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  {The declaration line is the line containing the reference name eg \u2018(ref:V101)\u2019}\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    Please only place comments or warnings about a question at the end of the declaration line, following the \u2018(ref:Vn)\u2019\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-6218-o27426\"><\/a>Step 3: Importing the new translated file<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>   Before importing the translation, check your translated text file to make sure it has the same number of lines as the original, and all the lines in capitals are the same as in the original file. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>   For the import you will need both the original exported file and the translated file. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>   Open the questionnaire in the Questionnaire design window. This adds a new language edition to your questionnaire. (If you already have the correct language in your questionnaire, just select it in the list.)  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"283\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/definelang-png.png\" alt=\"DefineLang.PNG\" class=\"wp-image-6225\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"8\">\n<li>   The <strong>Define Language<\/strong> dialog opens. This shows the report on a question with numerals, where the numbers are the same in both languages.If you want to keep a copy of the report, click<strong> Send To<\/strong> to save it to a file. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  Click<strong> OK <\/strong>to clear the window.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>   The translated language is added to your questionnaire. Click on the new edition tab to display it. By default, a language question is inserted at the beginning of the questionnaire, allowing the respondent to select the language they would like to use.
