This particular example uses a derived variable in conjunction with a pattern to extract the postal area from a full UK postcode. The postcode uk pattern is supplied with Snap XMP Desktop and may be used to validate replies to literal response questions representing UK postcodes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The UK postcode standard is made up of four components; Area, District, Sector and Unit. If set up correctly, the result box should display just the area component of the postcode.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  Click <strong>OK<\/strong>&nbsp;to exit the pattern test and then click <strong>OK<\/strong>&nbsp;again to save your pattern.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-4924-_Step_2:_Creating\"><\/a>Step 2: Creating a derived variable to use the new pattern<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The second step is to create a derived variable that can be used in conjunction with the UK Postal Area pattern that you have created.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n  Select <strong>Variables <\/strong>\n  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/variablesicon-png-3.png\" class=\"wp-image-4928\" alt=\"VariablesIcon.png\">\n   &nbsp;from the Snap toolbar.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  Click <strong>New variable<\/strong> \n  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/newicon-png-4.png\" class=\"wp-image-4929\" alt=\"NewIcon.png\">\n   to create a new variable. \n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the following values:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Name\t\tPostalArea (or another meaningful name)<\/strong>\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Label\t\tArea<\/strong>\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type<\/strong>\t\t<strong>Derived<\/strong> \n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Response<\/strong>\t<strong>Single<\/strong>\n  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  In the code list you can identify the postcode areas that you want to use in the analysis stage.
