As a result, you need to account for every possible variation in order to capture all the data.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>     If the postcodes or zip codes include letter combinations that are also in another postcode or zip code, for example, <strong>S7<\/strong> and <strong>BS7<\/strong>, put the more complex codes before the simpler ones, that is, <strong>i<\/strong>nsert <strong>BS7<\/strong> before <strong>S7<\/strong>.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>     If the postcodes or zip codes include number combinations that are in another postcode or zip code, for example, <strong>SW1<\/strong> and <strong>SW11<\/strong>, put a space after the shorter code.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>     Additionally, it is always best to enter each postcode or zip code in inverted commas, for example, \u201c<strong>BS8<\/strong>\u201d.   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create the postcode or zip code derived variable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>   To create the derived single variable, please follow the&nbsp;steps below to categorize the postcodes and zip codes by area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>   Open the <strong>Variables<\/strong> window&nbsp;   <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/variablesicon-png.png\" class=\"wp-image-4827\" alt=\"VariablesIcon.png\">    and click&nbsp;   <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/newicon-png.png\" class=\"wp-image-4828\" alt=\"NewIcon.png\">   &nbsp;to add a new variable. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>   Select <strong><em>Derived<\/em><\/strong> from the <strong>Type<\/strong> drop-down and <strong><em>Single<\/em><\/strong> from the <strong>Response<\/strong> drop-down. A single response is used as each respondent only falls into one of the new codes. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>   When created, a derived variable is automatically named, starting from V1. You can change this name to one that describes the variable. Enter the new derived variable name in <strong>Name<\/strong>.   <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"563\" height=\"454\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/postcodederivedvariable-png.png\" alt=\"Derived variable used to analyze postcodes and zip codes\" class=\"wp-image-4829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/postcodederivedvariable-png.png 563w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/postcodederivedvariable-png-300x242.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li> In the <strong>Code list<\/strong> grid, click in the <strong>Label<\/strong> column next to code 1 and type in the first postcode or zip code area you want to categorise, in this case BS4. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>   In the <strong>Values<\/strong> column for code 1 type in the values to search the data. For example, when searching for any cases where BS4 has been entered the values would be Q11=\u201dBS4\u2033 or Q11=\u201dbs4\u2033 or Q11=\u201dBs4\u2033 or Q11=\u201dbS4\u201d, with each variation of BS4 being accounted for.
