This feature is set in the <strong>Validation and Masking<\/strong> side menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Mandatory<\/strong> option needs to be set on before the <strong>Min answers<\/strong> drop down list is enabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Select the <strong>Min answers<\/strong> from the drop down list. This feature is set in the <strong>Validation and Masking<\/strong> side menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Select the <strong>Max answers<\/strong> from the drop down list. Here the maximum number of answers is 2. This can be used when there are several answers to choose from alongside answers such as, \u201cOther\u201d or \u201cDon\u2019t Know\u201d. If these answers are selected by the respondent you may want to deselect or prevent the other answers being selected. This can be done by setting an answer to be mutually exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Select the question that you would like to set with a mutually exclusive answer.<\/li><li>Select the <strong>Validation &amp; masking<\/strong> side menu.<\/li><li>Go to the <strong>Mutually-exclusive options.<\/strong><\/li><li>Select the box next to the answer or answers that are mutually exclusive.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"313\" height=\"184\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/46.MutuallyExclusive.png\" alt=\"Set the mutually exclusive answers for a multi choice question\" class=\"wp-image-4774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/46.MutuallyExclusive.png 313w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/46.MutuallyExclusive-300x176.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\"><li>Selecting a mutually exclusive code in a multiple response question will clear all other codes. If you select another code after a mutually exclusive code, then the mutually exclusive code is cleared.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ordering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  To avoid any interview bias, it is possible to rotate or re-order the codes of a question. The codes are re-ordered each time the question is shown in an interview, according to the ordering option selected.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  During the interview the question codes are re-arranged in the specified order. The code numbers remain the same and the response is recorded against the correct answer code.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The available ordering options are\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>None<\/strong>: the codes are always presented in the order shown.\n  <\/li><li><strong>Inverse<\/strong>: the codes are presented in reverse order in successive interviews.\n  <\/li><li><strong>Forward<\/strong>: the codes move forward on successive interviews.\n  <\/li><li><strong>Random<\/strong>: The codes are randomly re-arranged for each interview.\n  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  You can set ordering in the Validation and Masking side menu in the Build tab.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a id=\"post-412-_Toc33623609\"><\/a>\n  Select the question that you wish to order\n<\/li><li>\n  Select the&nbsp;<strong>Validation &amp; masking<\/strong>&nbsp;side menu.\n<\/li><li>\n  Go to the&nbsp;<strong>Ordering <\/strong>option<strong>.<\/strong>\n<\/li><li>\n  In <strong>Method <\/strong>select the type of ordering.\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"417\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/orderingsoa-png.png\" alt=\"Ordering methods available\" class=\"wp-image-4525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/orderingsoa-png.png 417w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/orderingsoa-png-300x144.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Excluding codes from the ordering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  There is often a requirement to leave some codes in their original positions, for example, when the question contains a code such as &#8220;Other&#8221; or \u201cNone of the above\u201d. These codes are usually displayed at the end of the list of choices. You can exclude final codes from the ordering by specifying the code value(s) to exclude in the Exclude field. This can be a single number or a comma separated list, but must include the final code.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  You can exclude codes in the Validation and Masking side menu in the Build tab.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n  Select the question where you wish to exclude codes.\n<\/li><li>\n  Select the&nbsp;<strong>Validation &amp; masking<\/strong>&nbsp;side menu.\n<\/li><li>\n  Go to the&nbsp;<strong>Ordering <\/strong>option<strong>.<\/strong>\n<\/li><li>\n  In <strong>Exclude <\/strong>enter the code or codes to exclude from the ordering. \n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  For example, a question has 6 codes with \u201cNone of the above\u201d as the last code. In <strong>Exclude<\/strong>, enter 6 to exclude the final code. When the question is shown in an interview, code 6 will remain in its original position and codes 1 to 5 will be ordered randomly.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"233\" height=\"121\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/orderingso-png.png\" alt=\"Ordering the codes in a Random order and excluding code value 6\" class=\"wp-image-4526\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Initial Value<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  An initial value can be set for a question. This value is selected or displayed in the question when a participant is completing the questionnaire. The <strong>Initial Value<\/strong> field can be set to a code, literal constant or an expression using values from the preceding questions, depending on the question style. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The initial value is set in the Validation and Masking side menu in the Build section.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n  Select the question where you wish to exclude codes.\n<\/li><li>\n  Select the&nbsp;<strong>Validation &amp; masking<\/strong>&nbsp;side menu.\n<\/li><li>\n  Go to the&nbsp;<strong>Initial Value <\/strong>option<strong>.<\/strong>\n<\/li><li>\n  In<strong> Value<\/strong>, enter the code, literal or expression.\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>   For example, in a single choice question enter 1 to select the first code. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"245\" height=\"111\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/initialvalue1-png.png\" alt=\"Initial value set to 1, the first code value\" class=\"wp-image-4527\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>   For an example on how to set the initial value using an expression a questionnaire is set up with Q2 is an Open Series question asking for the number of adults and children in a group of people at a restaurant and Q3 is an Open Ended question asking how many people in the party ordered food. Usually everyone orders food so the default for Q3 is the total number of people in Q2.   <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"586\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/initialvalue2-png.png\" class=\"wp-image-4528\" alt=\"InitialValue2.PNG\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/initialvalue2-png.png 586w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/initialvalue2-png-300x171.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  Select Q3 and in <strong>Value<\/strong>, enter the expression <strong>Q2a + Q2b<\/strong> so the initial value in Q3 defaults to the total number of people entered in Q2.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read Only<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  When a question is set as <strong>Read only<\/strong> this prevents the participant from answering or overwriting that question during an interview. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The read only property may be used where:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n    the question is seeded with values from a participant database that you do not want the participant to change\n  <\/li><li>\n    the question contains an initial value that is based on answers to previous questions in the survey that you do not want the participant to change\n  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  You can set a question as read only in the Validation and Masking side menu in the Build section.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n  Select the question where you wish to exclude codes.\n<\/li><li>\n  Select the&nbsp;<strong>Validation &amp; masking<\/strong>&nbsp;side menu.\n<\/li><li>\n  Go to the&nbsp;<strong>Initial Value <\/strong>option<strong>.<\/strong>\n<\/li><li>\n  In <strong>Read only<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>select <strong>Yes <\/strong>to prevent the participant from changing the question, or <strong>No<\/strong> to allow the participant to edit the question. \n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"233\" height=\"129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/readonly-png.png\" alt=\"Read only flag in the Snap Online Designer\" class=\"wp-image-4530\"\/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Validation ensures that the respondent enters data into a question in the correct format and that other input criteria are satisfied.
