Often, a questionnaire contains questions that invite the participant to enter comments. In an online questionnaire, these questions have a maximum number of characters that the respondent can enter. You can create a character counter to let participants keep track of the comment length. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can choose whether the character counter displays:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
the number of characters remaining<\/li>\n\n\n\n
the total number of characters available<\/li>\n\n\n\n
the number of characters they have used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
A character count is added to the survey as a Response property. This feature is only available for Open Ended questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adding a character counter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n
Open the survey in the Questionnaire window. Make sure that you are in Design<\/strong> mode<\/strong> and that the toolbar topic is set to Font<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Place the cursor at the point where you wish to insert the character counter. In the example, the character count is in the footnote of the open-ended question.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n
Click Insert<\/strong> and select Response Property <\/strong>from the menu. This opens the New embedded response property<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n
In Property, select the counter type.\n
\n
Response Count<\/strong> shows the number of characters that the participant has entered<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Characters Left<\/strong> shows the number of characters remaining in the response. This is the default.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Max Count<\/strong> shows the maximum number of characters allowed in the response<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Click OK<\/strong>. The counter type is inside curly brackets; {count<\/strong>}, {left<\/strong>} or {max<\/strong>}, to show that it is a text-substituted field. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n
When the participant answers the question they will see the character count change as they enter their comments.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Set the maximum length of a response or the size of a response in the question’s Variable properties.<\/strong> By default the maximum length is 9999 characters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
