Unfortunately, voter turnout in elections rarely reflects the importance of the process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The national turnout (percentage of the population who actually voted) for the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) 2021 elections was just 45%. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC reported that 54% of young people in Wales failed to register to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However \u2013 the Children\u2019s for Commissioner for Wales is on a mission to get young people engaged with politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Project Vote?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The voting age for Senedd elections was lowered to 16 in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So to encourage the next generation to head to the polls in the 2026 elections and beyond, the Children\u2019s Commissioner for Wales (CCfW) began a drive to teach youngsters about politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ccw-logo.gif\" alt=\"ccw-logo\" class=\"wp-image-31793\" width=\"242\" height=\"117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ccw-logo.gif 709w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ccw-logo-600x291.gif 600w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ccw-logo-150x73.gif 150w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ccw-logo-500x243.gif 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Project Vote was initiated in spring 2021 to coincide with the Senedd elections in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schools around Wales would run a parallel \u201cmock\u201d election, with pupils voting for political candidates in their constituency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were also given lessons on democracy and the Senedd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fafafa\">\u201cWe chose Snap Because of our previous experiences &#8211; they always do the work on time and to a really high standard.\u201d \u2013 <strong>Lewis Lloyd, Communications Officer, Children\u2019s Commissioner for Wales<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key points<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pupils age 11-15<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online surveys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10,000 replies from young people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>60% agreed they would be more likely to vote because of it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased knowledge and awareness of the Senedd<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second collaboration in last 12 months between Snap Surveys and CCfW<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recreating national elections with Snap Surveys\u2019 platform<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to coronavirus restrictions, online surveys were preferable to paper ballots used in real elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We set up surveys mirroring each constituency and region ballot paper \u2013 with simple questions as you would get on a real ballot paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We then set up unique survey links for each school so that they would see their corresponding ballot paper (for the correct constituency and region).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teachers would receive the link and share it with pupils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10,000 responses,<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 10,000 responses were gathered during the two-week project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To increase response rates, surveys were set up in both English and Welsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outcome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Project Vote was a success \u2013 increasing knowledge and awareness of the Senedd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 1 in 20 young people in Wales took part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the conclusion of the project, 60% of pupils agreed they would be more likely to vote in elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A glimpse into the future?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, Plaid Cymru received the most votes across the country. Labour were a close second, with Green and Conservatives a distant joint third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This could be an early indication of a big change in the political landscape in the years to come, with Welsh Independence a cornerstone of Plaid Cymru\u2019s campaigning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We shall see!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thanks to the Children\u2019s Commissioner for Wales for once again choosing us to help with their project.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fafafa\">\u201cWhen we started this project, we&#8217;d intended to hold our parallel vote with paper ballots but had to rethink our approach because of the virus. Having worked with Snap Surveys in the past to conduct large-scale surveys, we knew that their track record would give us a reliable and efficient alternative to paper. Their design meant that the survey looked like an official ballot paper, giving pupils the closest to real-life experience that we could in the circumstances. And importantly, it met our requirement of needing to be as easy as possible for schools &#8211; teachers simply had to forward the link on to pupils taking part.
