The variable can then be used in tables and charts in the usual way.\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"143\" height=\"171\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/openendedliteral5-png.png\" alt=\"Table showing participant's comments\" class=\"wp-image-2925\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  Snap is case sensitive so an appropriate pattern must be applied to the source variable to ensure that all cases with relevant comments are captured.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-2918-_Toc35499222\"><\/a>Categorising postcodes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The best way of analysing postcodes is to create a Derived Single Response variable and to apply a pattern to the variable.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The following instructions show how to categorise the postcodes by area.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>   Select <strong>Tailor | Patterns <\/strong>to open the <strong>Patterns<\/strong> dialog. <\/li><li>   Select <strong>postcode uk<\/strong> from the list and click <strong>Clone<\/strong>. <\/li><li>   Give the pattern a new name, such as UK Postcode area. <\/li><li>   Clear the <strong>Result<\/strong> box if required. Hover over the <strong>Result<\/strong> box and right click. <\/li><li>   Highlight <strong>Component<\/strong> and a list will appear containing the components of the pattern. <\/li><li>   Choose <strong>area<\/strong>.
