Sometimes Weights<\/strong> are used as part of a calculation. They give different scores to the responses, so you can convert a variable code into another value for calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n You can use weights to subtract the negative from the positive values of a rating scale variable. By using this data in a statistics table, you can see whether the ratings were generally positive or negative. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n This example assumes a five-code scale, in which the middle value is neutral, such as Q6a (speed of service). Because the rating scale only contains counts of responses, you need to set up a derived variable in order to calculate the statistics of the scored response. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Click \"WeightsIcon.png\" to display the Weights <\/strong>window. <\/li>
  2. Click \"NewSurveyIcon.png\" to add a new weight and specify the Weight Details as follows:
    • Name<\/strong>: WT6 <\/li>
    • Label<\/strong>: Weight pos\/neg <\/li>
    • Decimal places<\/strong>: 0 <\/li>
    • Number of codes<\/strong>: 5 <\/li><\/ul><\/li>
    • Specify the Code Details: <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      1. Click \"SaveIcon.png\" to save the Weight. <\/li>
      2. Click \"VariablesIcon.png\" to display the Variables <\/strong>window. <\/li>
      3. Click \"NewSurveyIcon.png\" to add a new variable. <\/li>
      4. Specify the Variable Details:
        • Name<\/strong>: V10 <\/li>
        • Label<\/strong>: Calculated difference <\/li>
        • Type<\/strong>: Derived (the variable will derive its data from other existing variables). <\/li>
        • Response<\/strong>: Quantity (the response will be a numeric value for each case). <\/li><\/ul><\/li>
        • Specify the Code Details to combine the Weight with the Speed of service rating variable: <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          2. \n Click \n \"AnalysisTblIcon.png\"\n to display the Analysis Definition dialog to create a table.\n<\/li>
          3. \n Specify the Analysis as V10, which is the variable to be weighted.\n<\/li>
          4. \n Select Statistics table from the list for the Break (or enter STATS).\n<\/li>
          5. \n Click OK<\/strong> and the table will be built.\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            \n The Sum will be the difference between the positive and negative values.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
