These show how confident you can be that a specified proportion of the population lie within a calculated range. The confidence intervals are available in the <strong>Summary Statistics<\/strong> tab of the Analysis Tailoring dialog. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-2516-_Toc35499148\"><\/a>Confidence intervals on percentage values<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The most common use of confidence intervals is when creating groups from a ratings scale. The table below shows a ratings scale for speed of service, broken down by age and gender.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  It includes a satisfied scale, which is the percentage of respondents who selected either &#8220;Very Good&#8221; or &#8220;Good&#8221;. For the <strong>Base <\/strong>column in the table below, you can be 95% confident that the percentage of respondents in the target population satisfied with &#8220;Speed of Service&#8221; is in the range (53 &#8211; 5)% and (53 + 5)%; that is, between 48% and 58%. The size of margins varies according to the sample size and will generally be reduced with larger samples.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"526\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/satisfactionscale3-png-1.png\" alt=\"Example of an analysis table showing the satisfaction percentages including the confidence interval\" class=\"wp-image-2517\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  You have control over the following aspects:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n    whether to show the Confidence Interval statistics (as above)\n  <\/li><li>\n    the Level of Confidence\n  <\/li><li>\n    which categories of the row variable represent the required group\n  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-2516-_Toc35499149\"><\/a>How the confidence interval is calculated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  Using an example of a question which:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n    has 5 codes (&#8220;Very Good&#8221;, &#8220;Good&#8221;, &#8220;OK&#8221;, &#8220;Poor&#8221;, &#8220;Very Poor&#8221;)\n  <\/li><li>\n    with a base of 389 respondents\n  <\/li><li>\n    53% of the respondents said that the service was &#8220;Very Good&#8221; or &#8220;Good&#8221; and the remaining 47% chose the other 3 categories\n  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  You can then calculate the confidence interval as follows:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"665\" height=\"37\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/https-www-snapsurveys-com-help-15288-bmp.png\" alt=\"Confidence level calculation\" class=\"wp-image-2518\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The 95% confidence level has a constant of 1.96.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  In the example, this gives:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  i.e., a Confidence Interval of \u00b1 5%\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  You can be 95% confident that 53% (\u00b1 5%) of the population are &#8220;Very Satisfied&#8221; or &#8220;Fairly Satisfied&#8221; with the service provided. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If tables are weighted then the calculation of the Confidence Interval will be based on the weighted results not the original cases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-2516-_Toc35499150\"><\/a>Confidence intervals on means with scoring systems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  The mean value is the value for the sample using a numerical scoring system for responses. The confidence interval is the likely range of mean values for the target population.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  Using an example of a question which has 5 codes (&#8220;Very Good&#8221;, &#8220;Good&#8221;, &#8220;OK&#8221;, &#8220;Poor&#8221;, &#8220;Very Poor&#8221;), with a base of 204 respondents which uses a scoring system of: +2 for Very Good to &#8211; 2 for Very Poor the mean value and standard deviation will be calculated using these scores.
