The data will be added to the end of the current respondent data. The following example shows details from a spreadsheet of customer information being imported into Snap Desktop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>As a precaution, archive your survey first before merging the data.<\/li><li>From the <strong>Survey Overview<\/strong> window, open the survey that you want to add data to.<\/li><li>On the Snap toolbar click <strong>Database Links<\/strong> <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"27\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1984\" alt=\"DBLinksIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/dblinksicon-png-1.png\"> to open the <strong>Database Links<\/strong> dialog.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"596\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/dblinksdlg-png-3.png\" alt=\"Database links dialog\" class=\"wp-image-1985\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/dblinksdlg-png-3.png 596w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/dblinksdlg-png-3-300x142.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\"><li>Click <strong>New<\/strong> to open the <strong>Database Linkage Wizard<\/strong> which guides you through the process of creating a new database link.<\/li><li>In the Linkage Type section, select <strong>Import from Database<\/strong> and then click <strong>Next<\/strong><\/li><li>Depending on the data source you have choose <strong>Select a database file<\/strong> or <strong>Build a database link<\/strong>. If the database type you need is not listed as one of the defaults in the <strong>Select Database File<\/strong> dialog box then you can use the <strong>Build Data Link<\/strong> button to create the connection.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"575\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/datalinkagewiz1-png.png\" alt=\"Select the database file or build a database link\" class=\"wp-image-1986\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/datalinkagewiz1-png.png 575w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/datalinkagewiz1-png-300x176.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"7\"><li>Click <strong>Select Database File<\/strong> and browse to the file you need in the <strong>Select Database File<\/strong> dialog box and click <strong>Open<\/strong>. This example uses an Excel spreadsheet called Customers.xls.<\/li><li>Select which area of your database contains the data to use in the <strong>Select Table<\/strong> area. For example, the required worksheets in a spreadsheet file.<\/li><li>On the next page of the wizard select the type of <strong>Import\/Export<\/strong> option you want:<ul><li><strong>Join cases where the link variables match<\/strong><\/li><li>Only import\/export data where the value in the link variable matches between the two surveys (E.g. a survey containing customer ID numbers matches the information in the link survey with the same ID number.) This imports all requested data where two ID numbers are matched, and ignores all data in cases where the ID number does not match.<\/li><li><strong>Join matching cases and append unmatched cases<\/strong><\/li><li>This option works as above, and also adds the unmatched data as new cases at the end of the file.<\/li><li><strong>Append unmatched cases<\/strong><\/li><li>This option only imports\/exports cases that do not find a match between the link variable in the surveys.<\/li><li><strong>Append all cases<\/strong><\/li><li>This option imports\/exports every case of data into your survey as a new data case. It does not try to match the link variables.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>If you select one of the first three Import\/Export Options, you must set up the Link Variables options.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"575\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/datalinkagewiz2-png.png\" alt=\"Select the options used to link the survey to a database\" class=\"wp-image-1987\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/datalinkagewiz2-png.png 575w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/datalinkagewiz2-png-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Select a database field which contains unique identifiers which identifies cases in the response data (either a unique identifier or a unique case number which matches the case number).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Select a survey variable that contains the equivalent unique identifier, or select <strong>Use Snap case number<\/strong> if the database you are linked to contained case numbers,.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"11\"><li>Click <strong>Next.<\/strong><\/li><li>The next step of the wizard asks which data fields you would like to import into your survey. The left column displays all of the fields from the database. The right column asks you to select the survey variables that will contain the imported data fields. You need to click each of the rows in the right hand column in order to activate the drop-down boxes.<\/li><li>If you wish to import a field into your survey that does not already have a variable set up, select <strong>Create variable <\/strong>in the menu adjacent to the field you wish to import. The <strong>Create Variable<\/strong> dialog is displayed. The <strong>Name <\/strong>and <strong>Label<\/strong> use the database field name as a default. You can edit these. Click <strong>OK <\/strong>to create the new variable.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"349\" height=\"248\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/createvariable-png.png\" alt=\"Creating a variable to link to a database\" class=\"wp-image-1988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/createvariable-png.png 349w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/createvariable-png-300x213.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"14\"><li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li><li>You are shown the name of the database link you have just set up and a summary of the import or export you have specified. The name and label can be modified if required. When ready, click <strong>Finish<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Snap shows the <strong>Database Links<\/strong> dialog including the new link.<\/li><li>If you wish to alter any part of the link, click <strong>Modify<\/strong>. To delete a link, click <strong>Delete<\/strong>.
