{"id":1969,"date":"2020-07-15T14:27:13","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T13:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&#038;p=1969"},"modified":"2024-03-04T20:45:43","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T20:45:43","slug":"overview-for-importing-and-exporting-data","status":"publish","type":"epkb_post_type_1","link":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/overview-for-importing-and-exporting-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Overview for importing and exporting data"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n  Survey data can be \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    exported from Snap Desktop for use in other surveys or other packages\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    imported into Snap Desktop from other surveys or other packages\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  Common uses of exporting and importing data are:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    exporting data from one Snap survey into another to merge a number of surveys\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    exporting or importing data between other applications such as a spreadsheet or database\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    exporting literal response data to a word processor application\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  There are a number of ways to export and import data in Snap Desktop\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    Database Link Wizard\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    Data Import window\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    Data Export window\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"database-link-wizard\">Using the Database Linkage Wizard to import and export data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  Snap Desktop has the facility to import and export data, variables and codes between surveys. The easiest way to do this is using a database link to import or export the data. The <strong>Database Link Wizard <\/strong>provides the following import and export options:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    Import from a database\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    Export to a database\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    Import from a Snap survey\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    Export to a Snap survey\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>   In the <strong>Database Linkage Wizard<\/strong> you are guided through the process and you can choose settings to select the data required and to match the variables and codes that are not identical.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  To open the Database Linkage Wizard\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n  From the <strong>Survey Overview<\/strong> window, open the survey that you want to add data to.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n  On the Snap toolbar click <strong>Database Links<\/strong> \n  <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"27\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/dblinksicon-png-4.png\" class=\"wp-image-6022\" alt=\"DBLinksIcon.png\">\n   to open the <strong>Database href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/using-hot-links\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hot Link<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the Import and Export dialogs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  These windows are used to\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n    Import from the clipboard\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    Import from a file\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    Export to the clipboard\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n    Export to a file\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  Common formats importing data, variables, weights, styles, tables and charts to Snap Desktop. Text fields are surrounded by quote characters.\n<\/p><p>\n  Tab separated (TSV) contains a series of fields each separated by a tab.\n<\/p><p>\n  Other formats are available when importing other items including the Snap Desktop format is used in other import dialogs\n<\/p><p>\n  Snap Interchange format (SnIF) is a format for transporting all types of data between Snap surveys.\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>File Clipboard<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Select radio button to specify source of file\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>File:<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Name of the data file. Use the&nbsp;<strong>Browse<\/strong>&nbsp;button to select it.\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>Options<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  &nbsp;\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>Code Labels<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Check to substitute code labels for numbers in the data.\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>Label Row<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Check if there is an additional row of variable labels under the initial variable names row in the spreadsheet.\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>Encoding<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Specify the byte format for different file types. Use&nbsp;<strong>Automatic&nbsp;<\/strong>unless you have specific requirements. \n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>Generate new variable names<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Re-number the imported variables to the next available question number in the survey (Variables only)\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>Generate new variable positions<\/strong>\n<\/p><\/td><td><p>\n  Changes the source of the imported variables to the next available positions in the data file (Variables only)\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"export-dialog\">Export dialog<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n  There are different versions of the import dialog that are used for importing data, variables, weights, styles, tables and charts to Snap Desktop. Use&nbsp;<strong>Automatic&nbsp;<\/strong>unless you have specific requirements.
