Right-click and select <strong>Variable Propertie<\/strong>s from the menu to display the <strong>Variable Properties<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the mask expression in the <strong>Mask <\/strong>field. For example, to hide code five, type <strong>not 5<\/strong>. To show codes 2 to 4 and hide all other codes, type <strong>2~4<\/strong> in the <strong>Mask <\/strong>field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>OK <\/strong>to save your settings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1732\" alt=\"PrintPreviewIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/printpreviewicon-png-2.png\"> to preview your mask.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: the Mask will not be visible in the Questionnaire Design Window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1731-_Toc33623584\"><\/a>Applying dynamic masking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dynamic masking is frequently used to hide or display responses that have not been mentioned in a previous question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The example below deals with questions with identical codes. The second question (Q2) will have codes hidden depending on the responses selected on the first question (Q1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Right-click the question that you wish to apply a mask to.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>Variable Properties<\/strong> from the menu to display the <strong>Variable Properties<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter a mask expression in the Mask field. You can use any logical expression as\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To hide all codes selected in Q1, type <strong>not Q1 <\/strong>in the <strong>Mask <\/strong>field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To only display codes that have been selected in Q1, type <strong>Q1<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To display codes that have been selected in Q1 or Q2, type <strong>Q1 or Q2<\/strong> in the Mask field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To display codes that have been selected in Q1 or Q2 but hide codes that have been selected in Q3, type <strong>Q1 or Q2 and not Q3<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to save your settings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it is likely that there will be only one code available to choose, and if so, the respondent must select that one code, you can enable <strong>Auto answer.<\/strong> This means that if there is only one code available, that response will automatically be selected and teh question will not be displayed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right-click the question that you wish to apply auto answer to. (This is usually a question with a mask applied).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>Variable Properties<\/strong> from the menu to display the <strong>Variable Properties<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>Yes <\/strong>in the drop-down list by A<strong>uto answer<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1731-_Toc33623585\"><\/a>Creating and applying a conditional mask using a derived variable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can create a dynamic mask where the possible responses displayed depend upon your answers to previous questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The example below explains how to define a derived variable that is used to mask departments, depending which office someone works in. It assumes that you have a survey where <strong>Q1 <\/strong>asks which office someone works in and <strong>Q2 <\/strong>asks which department they work in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q1<\/strong> is assumed to have three codes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><p>Code<\/p><\/td><td><p>Value<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>1<\/strong><\/p><\/td><td><p>London<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>2<\/strong><\/p><\/td><td><p>New York<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p><strong>3<\/strong><\/p><\/td><td> Paris<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The mask variable will be a multi-choice variable with the same number of codes as the variable (<strong>Q2<\/strong>) that it is masking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1731-_Toc33623586\"><\/a>Creating the mask<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1733\" alt=\"VariablesIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variablesicon-png-15.png\"> to open the <strong>Variables<\/strong> window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the variable to which you wish to provide a mask for.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1734\" alt=\"CloneSurveyIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/clonesurveyicon-png-5.png\"> to clone the variable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The new variable will open. It will have the same codes as the variable it is based on.
