{"id":1683,"date":"2020-07-10T10:58:36","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T09:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&#038;p=1683"},"modified":"2024-09-09T12:14:12","modified_gmt":"2024-09-09T11:14:12","slug":"introduction-to-patterns","status":"publish","type":"epkb_post_type_1","link":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/introduction-to-patterns\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction to patterns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Patterns<\/strong> are used to define the format of the data that a participant should enter when they are completing the questionnaire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In data entry, patterns are used to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure that respondents or data entry personnel enter the correct format for information such as postcodes, zip codes or National Insurance numbers. Pattern matching is used to check whether the answer is a possible match in the pattern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Convert the data into a standard form, such as adding currency symbols in quantity data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In filters and derived variables, you can<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the pre-defined patterns to temporarily change data, for example, converting literal responses to lower case<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use one part of a pattern made up of several defined parts for example, the area code in a phone number, and use that part to analyse the data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Snap XMP Desktop is supplied with a library of pre-defined<b> Patterns<\/b>. You can also create your own using the Patterns dialog from <strong>View|Patterns<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1683-_Toc33623562\"><\/a>System patterns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Snap XMP Desktop is supplied with a library of pre-defined<b> <\/b>patterns that include patterns for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Literals <\/strong>such as email address, postcode and zip code<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dates <\/strong>such as date in words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quantities <\/strong>such as currency and decimal number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Components <\/strong>that can be used to build your own patterns, but cannot be used directly in variable details or as filters. For example letter or digit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For each pattern there is<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A unique pattern name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A form which identifies which types of variable can use the pattern<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A label describing how the pattern is used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1683-_Toc33623567\"><\/a>Applying a pattern in the questionnaire window<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the survey in the questionnaire window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select a question, right-click and choose <strong>Variable Properties. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure you have the right <strong>Response<\/strong> selected for the question. <strong>Patterns<\/strong> are only available for open-ended questions, including date, time, literal, and quantity questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the <strong>Source Pattern<\/strong> list to view the existing patterns for use with the variable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"280\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variablepropsdatepattern-png-2.png\" alt=\"Setting a pattern for a question in the Variable Properties dialog\" class=\"wp-image-1707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variablepropsdatepattern-png-2.png 280w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variablepropsdatepattern-png-2-226x300.png 226w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\">\n<li>If the pattern you were expecting to see is not showing you might need to change the <strong>Response<\/strong> type for the question. Only those patterns that are relevant to the response type are shown in the list of <strong>Source Patterns<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to apply the pattern to the variable or <strong>Cancel<\/strong> to abandon any changes that you have made.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1708\" alt=\"SaveIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/saveicon-png-23.png\"> in the <strong>Questionnaire<\/strong> window to save the <strong>Pattern<\/strong> and any other changes to the questionnaire.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1683-_Toc33623568\"><\/a>Applying a pattern in the Variables window<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can set the pattern for a variable using the <strong>Variable Details<\/strong> dialog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1709\" alt=\"VariablesIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variablesicon-png-14.png\"> to open the <strong>Variable<\/strong> window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the variable to which you wish to apply a <strong>Pattern<\/strong> and double click to open the <strong>Variable Details<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"27\" class=\"wp-image-1710\" alt=\"DesignModeIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/designmodeicon-png-32.png\"> to toggle definitions of the variable and you will see that the <strong>Variable Details<\/strong> now display information including <strong>Pattern<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the <strong>Pattern<\/strong> drop-down and a list of patterns, applicable to the response type, is shown.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"395\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variabledetailsdatepattern-png-2.png\" alt=\"Setting a pattern for a question in the Variable Details window\" class=\"wp-image-1711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variabledetailsdatepattern-png-2.png 648w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variabledetailsdatepattern-png-2-300x183.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\">\n<li>Choose the required pattern and click <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1712\" alt=\"SaveIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/saveicon-png-24.png\"> to save the changes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1683-_Toc33623569\"><\/a>Patterns during data entry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two ways of using patterns in data entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check the data against the requirements. If it does not match, display an error message.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the data against possible matches and change it to a standard format. If the data entered conforms to a number of entry options (for example, &#8220;two&#8221;, &#8220;2&#8221; or &#8220;\u00a32&#8221;) included in the pattern the data is accepted then converted to a standard format (for example, all of the above responses are converted to &#8220;2&#8221; for analysis).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1683-_Toc33623570\"><\/a>Composition of a pattern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Patterns are composed of components and matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>matches are text strings that a response must match<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>components consist of one or more text strings that part of a response must match<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Using components within matches means that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>specific parts of a respondent\u2019s answer can be identified and scrutinised at the analysis stage of the survey process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a consistent style of result can be output and analysed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the example below, the pattern has one match and four components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"395\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/patternpropsdlg-png-2.png\" alt=\"Creating a pattern\" class=\"wp-image-1713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/patternpropsdlg-png-2.png 395w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/patternpropsdlg-png-2-274x300.png 274w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the text string used to match the response, you can add further details about the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>you can add data in the <strong>Reference <\/strong>field about where you accessed the information for the pattern; for example, a website address; a database or a reference book<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you can specify what type of response the pattern can be used within the<strong> Used In<\/strong> field (select <strong>Other Patterns Only<\/strong> for patterns that will only be used when creating another pattern)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The example below shows two <strong>Matches <\/strong>for year; {4 digits} and {2 digits}, signifying that there can either be 4 digits or 2 digits representing the year part of the date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"395\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/componentpropdlg-png-2.png\" alt=\"Adding the year component\" class=\"wp-image-1714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/componentpropdlg-png-2.png 395w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/componentpropdlg-png-2-300x148.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Matches <\/strong>for the month component can be seen below. There are 5 matches within the component, signifying that either 12, 11 or 10 is acceptable or a zero followed by a digit, such as 05 or a single digit, such as 5 (to represent May).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"395\" height=\"222\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/componentpropdlg2-png-2.png\" alt=\"Adding the month component\" class=\"wp-image-1715\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/componentpropdlg2-png-2.png 395w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/componentpropdlg2-png-2-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The separator component of this DD\/MM\/YYYY pattern has been set up to accept dashes, obliques and full stops as the divider between the various parts of the date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"395\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/componentpropdlg3-png-2.png\" alt=\"Adding a separator component\" class=\"wp-image-1716\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/componentpropdlg3-png-2.png 395w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/componentpropdlg3-png-2-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1683-_Toc33623571\"><\/a>Creating a new pattern example<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This example shows how the DD\/MM\/YYYY pattern can be created. This ensures that&nbsp;the respondent enters a date with day-month-year format, where the year&nbsp;part can include a two-digit century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The separator between day\/month and month\/year can be any of &#8220;\/&#8221;, &#8220;-&#8221; or &#8220;.&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All these are valid dates: 06\/08\/2020; 6-8-2003; 06.8.2020; 6\/08\/20 for this pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of invalid dates are: 6<sup>th<\/sup> August 2020; 06\/Aug\/2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select <strong>View | Patterns <\/strong>to open the <strong>Patterns<\/strong> dialog. (Prior to build 12.10 this was on the Tailor menu.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>New <\/strong>in the <strong>Patterns<\/strong> dialog to display the <strong>Pattern Properties<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose a name for the pattern and type it in to the <strong>Name <\/strong>box. Try to make the name as specific as possible to its purpose. For example, rather than write it as Date write it as DD\/MM\/YYYY so that its format can be identified easily by others using it.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enter a <strong>Label<\/strong> giving more information. This will be displayed when the pattern is selected on the front page of the Patterns dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can enter a reference in the<strong> Reference <\/strong>giving specific details about where you accessed the information for the Pattern: for example, a website address; a database; a reference book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the response type that the pattern will be used with from the <strong>Usage<\/strong> drop-down list. For example for DD\/MM\/YYYY you might call one of the components &#8216;Day&#8217;, which you would type in the <strong>Name <\/strong>space. In <strong>Label <\/strong>you might write &#8216;Day part of Date&#8217;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>New<\/strong> to create a <strong>Match <\/strong>for the <strong>Component<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Match Pattern<\/strong> dialog displays.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You build up the pattern to match from text and components. You can use the buttons on the dialog to select items, or right-click the <strong>Match <\/strong>field to display the context menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Either type a text string into the <strong>Match <\/strong>box or double click one of the <strong>Global Patterns<\/strong> to select it.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For the day component you would want one digit or two digits recognised, as respondents would be likely to type in either one or two digits when answering this part of the question. For example: 01 or 1 when referring to the first day of the month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are looking for a particular character click <strong>Characters&#8230;<\/strong> to show more options in the <strong>Character Selection<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlight the characters required and click <strong>OK<\/strong>. If a letter is selected, both the lower and upper case version will show in the match unless <strong>Case Sensitive<\/strong> is ticked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"415\" height=\"286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/matchpatterndlg-png-2.png\" alt=\"Matching a pattern\" class=\"wp-image-1720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/matchpatterndlg-png-2.png 415w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/matchpatterndlg-png-2-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"8\">\n<li>For the first two-digit match of the Day example:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>either double-click <strong>digit <\/strong>in <strong>Global Patterns<\/strong> twice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or double-click <strong>digit <\/strong>and then use <strong>Repeat<\/strong> to permit multiple copies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Repeat<\/strong> button gives options for each part of the <strong>Component<\/strong>. Ensure that the part of the <strong>Component<\/strong> you want to affect is highlighted before selecting a<strong> Repeat <\/strong>command. Each of the commands creates constraints which the data must adhere to in order to fit the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"247\" height=\"243\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/repeatdlg-png-2.png\" alt=\"Setting the repetition of a pattern component\" class=\"wp-image-1721\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"9\">\n<li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to return to the <strong>Match Pattern<\/strong> dialog and <strong>OK<\/strong> again to return to the <strong>Component Properties<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once satisfied with all the <strong>Components, <\/strong>return to the <strong>Pattern Properties <\/strong>dialog.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1683-_Toc33623573\"><\/a>Deleting components<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you wish to delete any of the <strong>Components, <\/strong>highlight it and click <strong>Delete<\/strong>. (Prior to build 12.10 this was on the Tailor menu.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlight the required <strong>Pattern<\/strong> and click either <strong>Clone<\/strong> or <strong>Modify<\/strong> to access the <strong>Pattern Properties<\/strong> dialog box and then follow the instructions for creating a pattern provided earlier in this section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you wish to delete a pattern, click <strong>Delete<\/strong>. You are shown a warning message and asked to confirm that you want to delete the component.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You are unable to delete any of the System patterns provided with the software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you delete a component, you will need to modify any matches that contain the component, otherwise the associated pattern will not work correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always ensure that the longest match string is at the top of the list to improve the search efficiency when the pattern is in use. For example in a list of Matches of {digit} {digit}, {digit} {letter}, {digit} they should be listed in this order to identify answers with two digits before classifying them as errors from the other two matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1683-_Toc33623577\"><\/a>Copying patterns between surveys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you already have a survey containing patterns that you need, you can copy these to another survey by saving them in SnIF format or to the clipboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the survey containing the patterns you wish to copy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>View | Patterns<\/strong> to open the <strong>Patterns<\/strong> dialog.
