{"id":1664,"date":"2020-07-10T10:05:38","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T09:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&#038;p=1664"},"modified":"2022-01-17T15:25:08","modified_gmt":"2022-01-17T15:25:08","slug":"introduction-to-survey-logic","status":"publish","type":"epkb_post_type_1","link":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/introduction-to-survey-logic\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction to survey logic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Survey logic includes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>setting the response type (if you did not do so when creating the question) to specify whether respondents can enter a single choice, multiple choices, free text, dates etc.<\/li><li>setting up routing to direct respondents through the questions in different ways according to how they asked previous questions<\/li><li>setting up patterns to limit what responses they can provide for a question<\/li><li>seeding the survey with data such as names and addresses for a mail merge or user names for an online survey<\/li><li>setting up question and code rotation so that respondents are presented with questions in a random order<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all of these options are available for all outputs, for example, you can&#8217;t perform question rotation on a paper questionnaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1664-_Toc33623553\"><\/a>Controlling how the questionnaire is delivered<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you publish your survey, you can choose how the questions will be presented to the respondents. You can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1664-_Toc33623554\"><\/a>Change what appears in the questionnaire<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>change the questions presented using question routing (skip logic) so that questions are asked or not asked depending upon respondent&#8217;s previous answers<\/li><li>change the question text depending upon previous answers (this is known as dynamic text or piping)<\/li><li>display calculations carried out on previous answers using in-survey calculations (derived variables)<\/li><li>change which question codes are visible using masking<\/li><li>reduce the effects of position bias by randomly rotating the order of codes and questions<\/li><li>provide several versions of the same survey tailored to different topics<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1664-_Toc33623555\"><\/a>Limit or require answers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>force respondents to answer questions<\/li><li>limit the possible responses by applying a valid range of answers<\/li><li>apply patterns to make sure an answer is valid<\/li><li>send an email when you receive a particular answer<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot change questions for each respondent for paper questionnaires, but you can check the answers using patterns when entering the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also provide a tailored questionnaire that people can complete a number of times on different subjects by using group questionnaires (or iterative
