This can help you find out opinions from different groups, such as, tourists from a range of countries, or employees in different international locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Snap XMP comes with a range of multilingual survey templates that you can use when creating your survey or form. The templates available depend on your location. These include English and Welsh in the UK, and English with Spanish or French in the US region. There are also a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/european-survey-templates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European language survey templates<\/a>, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can add further languages to your questionnaire, or create your own multilingual survey templates. Find out more information in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/multi-lingual-surveys-and-forms\/\">Multi lingual surveys and forms<\/a> webinar. You may also adapt the style and language of one questionnaire to make it appropriate for sub-groups, such as, children and adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find out how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/selecting-language-using-map-control\/\">Selecting the language in a multi-lingual questionnaire by clicking an image<\/a> or how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/showing-multi-lingual-web-pages-on-submit\/\">show multi-lingual web pages after the survey or form is submitted<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1514-_Toc33623635\"><\/a>Adding a language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With the <strong>Questionnaire <\/strong>window open, click <strong>Editions and Style Templates<\/strong> <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/editionsicon-png-8.png\" alt=\"EditionsIcon.png\"> on the Questionnaire toolbar to display the <strong>Editions and Style Templates<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the <strong>Language <\/strong>button. The <strong>Languages<\/strong> dialog appears showing all languages currently associated with the questionnaire.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"269\" height=\"271\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/languagesdlg-png.png\" alt=\"Languages dialog\" class=\"wp-image-1517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/languagesdlg-png.png 269w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/languagesdlg-png-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check the <strong>Swap keyboard layouts<\/strong> box to make Snap automatically change to the appropriate keyboard setting for that language. This can be useful for language specific symbols but can be difficult for anyone used to a particular keyboard layout.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Add<\/strong>. This displays the <strong>Define Language<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"283\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/definelangdlg-png.png\" alt=\"Define language dialog\" class=\"wp-image-1518\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using the drop-down list, select the language you want in the <strong>Name<\/strong> drop-down list or select the abbreviation for the language you want in the <strong>Language<\/strong> drop-down list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you want to use a language that is not in the list you can overtype the text to create a custom language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Dictionary<\/strong> if you wish to set a dictionary for use with the spell checker for that language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to save and return to the <strong>Editions and Style Templates<\/strong> window which now shows all the editions with the associated languages.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"394\" height=\"316\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/newlanguagedlg-png.png\" alt=\"Using the Editions and Style Templates to add a new language\" class=\"wp-image-1519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/newlanguagedlg-png.png 394w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/newlanguagedlg-png-300x241.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"9\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you do not wish to use each language with every edition, uncheck the tick box beside the language. If the box is not selected, the edition will not be available in the questionnaire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>OK <\/strong>to return to the <strong>Questionnaire<\/strong> window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You can toggle between the language editions by<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>clicking on the tabs at the bottom of the screen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>using <strong>Alt + PageUp<\/strong> and <strong>Alt + PageDown <\/strong>to switch between the tabs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"412\" height=\"44\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/editiontabs-png-2.png\" alt=\"Tabs used to switch to a different edition\" class=\"wp-image-1520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/editiontabs-png-2.png 412w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/editiontabs-png-2-300x32.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are publishing a right&#8211;to-left language (such as Arabic) survey you may wish to add custom HTML to each of the survey pages to ensure that open response boxes are also right-to-left. E.g.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&lt;style&gt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>input {text-align:right !important;}<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>textarea{text-align:right !important;}<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&lt;\/style&gt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1514-_Toc33623636\"><\/a>Changing a language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you need to change a language that is already specified for a questionnaire, click <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1521\" alt=\"EditionsIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/editionsicon-png-9.png\"> to display the <strong>Editions and Style Templates<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Language<\/strong> to open the <strong>Languages <\/strong>dialog box.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"269\" height=\"271\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/languagesdlg-png-1.png\" alt=\"Languages dialog\" class=\"wp-image-1522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/languagesdlg-png-1.png 269w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/languagesdlg-png-1-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click <strong>Edit<\/strong>. This opens the <strong>Define Language<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"283\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/definelangdlg-png-1.png\" alt=\"Define language dialog\" class=\"wp-image-1523\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to save the changes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have already translated questions into the first language, and you then change the language, the translation text will remain in the previous language. You will have to re-translate the text into the new language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1514-_Toc33623637\"><\/a>Adding a new question in multiple languages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SurveyPaks can contain multiple language versions of the same questions. Completed multi-language surveys will also contain versions of the questions for all the languages in the survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a survey with more than one languages, and you have a survey or SurveyPak containing translated questions in those languages, you can add these saved questions to the surveys, and the correct language version of the question will be added to all the different language versions in your current survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you have an existing survey that include English and Arabic, and you wish to re-use the questions in another English and Arabic survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create the correct language version(s) of your survey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open the reference window and find the survey or SurveyPak containing the questions and the translations of those questions that you want.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drag the question from the reference window into your survey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The same question will appear in all language versions of your survey, in the appropriate language.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1514-_Toc33623638\"><\/a>Adding a derived variable in multiple languages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are using a derived variable codes or labels in your questionnaire or analyses, you need to provide versions of them for all the languages that you are using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you have an existing survey with English and German editions, and you are using a derived variable to put an appropriate greeting in the questionnaire text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create the derived variable in one language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the other language from the drop-down list at the top right.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variabledetailslanguage-png.png\" alt=\"Selecting the language used for a question\" class=\"wp-image-1524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variabledetailslanguage-png.png 648w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/variabledetailslanguage-png-300x92.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write the labels for the variable and codes for your derived variable in the new language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat for any other languages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1525\" alt=\"SaveIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/saveicon-png-20.png\"> to save the variable<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"translation\">Using the automatic translation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have added questions to your survey, and you then add a new language, you can automatically translate the questions if the translation already exists in a SurveyPak or a survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the <strong>Questionnaire <\/strong>window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open the <strong>Reference <\/strong>window and browse for the survey or SurveyPak containing the translated questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the <strong>Questionnaire <\/strong>window to make that the active window and select <strong>File|Translation<\/strong>. The translation wizard opens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>Translate from Reference<\/strong> from the <strong>Action<\/strong> menu. Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the language to translate from (reference language) and to (translation language) in the drop-down lists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the Complete variables only box if you wish only to use translations of complete questions. Uncheck the box if you want to translate partial questions where the automatic translator finds matching parts of a question (for example, Yes and No).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the <strong>Overwrite existing content<\/strong> box if you wish to overwrite and translated text which is already present in your survey. Clear the box if you want to preserve any existing translated text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Start<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will see a translation report , when the translation is complete. You can save this to a file or print it by clicking the <strong>Send To<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inspect the translated version of your survey. When questions or parts of questions have not been translated, they will show as grey and in the original language.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1514-_Toc33623640\"><\/a>Viewing variables available in other languages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"27\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-1526\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/referenceicon-png-4.png\" alt=\"ReferenceIcon.png\"> or press <strong>Alt+F12<\/strong> to open the <strong>Reference<\/strong> window. Select the survey or SurveyPak containing the questions you want.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the language of your choice in the drop-down list. If the language is not visible in the list, then it is not available in the stored survey or SurveyPak. If a specified language is not in the survey, its name will be greyed out in the language list. You can still select it and examine the questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Questions that are available in the chosen languages will be displayed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If the survey contains multiple language editions, and questions in the SurveyPak are not available in all the languages used in the survey, then those questions will be in grey. Questions available in all languages used in the survey are in black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using an external translator<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do not already have translations of your survey questions, you will need to get the survey translated. The most common process of doing this, is to export a text file containing the questions to be translated, and ask the translators to provide matched translations in the specified format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1514-_Toc33623642\"><\/a>Exporting the source file for translation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open your survey in <strong>Design <\/strong>mode<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>File|Translation<\/strong>. The translation wizard opens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>Prepare External Translation<\/strong> from the <strong>Action <\/strong>drop down list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specify how you wish your translation file to be created in the <strong>Translation Wizard Export<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"445\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/transexportwizard-png.png\" alt=\"Using the Translation wizard to export a language for translation\" class=\"wp-image-1529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/transexportwizard-png.png 445w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/transexportwizard-png-300x237.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you already have translated some of the questions, export to a <strong>Reference with a matched translation<\/strong>. This creates two files, one with the list of text to translate, and one with the list of translated texts with gaps for untranslated text. If you do not have any existing translation, you can create a <strong>Reference file only<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specify the <strong>Reference Language<\/strong>, which is the language that you want to translate. Then enter the name of the file to save the translated text. By default, the file name is the survey filename with a .txt suffix.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are creating a matched translation, specify the <strong>Translation Language<\/strong>, which is the language that you want to translate your text to. Then enter the name of the file where you want to save the list of existing translation texts. Ensure that this is a different file name to the reference language file name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the <strong>Omit repeated content<\/strong> box to limit the number of texts that are saved in the translation file. This omits duplicates of complete questions, instructions and labels (such as &#8220;Other&#8221;).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uncheck the <strong>Omit undefined translations<\/strong>, if available (this is used when you are exporting a translated survey for use in translating other surveys).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the <strong>Omit defined translations<\/strong> if you are creating a single file. This leaves out phrases which have already been translated. (If you are not sure about your existing translations, clear this box to ensure that all the survey text will be translated).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Start<\/strong> to start the export. You will see a translation report, when the export is complete. You can save this to a file or print it by clicking the <strong>Send To<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"post-1514-_Toc33623643\"><\/a>Importing your translated file<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you receive your translated text file, check it to ensure that it matches the format of the exported file. If you are content, you can then use it to translate your survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open your survey in <strong>Design<\/strong> mode <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"27\" class=\"wp-image-1530\" alt=\"DesignModeIcon.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/designmodeicon-png-26.png\"> .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>File|Translation<\/strong>. The translation wizard opens. Select <strong>Apply External Translation<\/strong> from the <strong>Action <\/strong>list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong>. The translation wizard import dialog appears.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the language in the survey that you are translating from. You would normally use the text file that you previously exported as the Reference Language file.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specify the language that you are translating to as the <strong>Translation Language<\/strong>. Select the file that you have received from your translator as the <strong>File name<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the <strong>Complete variables only<\/strong> box if you wish only to use translations of complete questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uncheck the box if you want to translate partial questions where the automatic translator finds matching strings or words (for example, Yes and No).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the <strong>Overwrite existing content<\/strong> box if you wish to overwrite any translated text which is already present in your survey.
