For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Combining categories within a Multi Choice variable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Converting numeric data into categories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Converting date and time data into categories<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You create derived variables in the Variable Details window in the same way as other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/working-with-variables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">variables<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a new derived variable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click the&nbsp;<strong>Variables<\/strong>&nbsp;button&nbsp;on the Snap XMP Desktop toolbar to open the&nbsp;<strong>Variables&nbsp;<\/strong>window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/newsurveyicon-png-7.png\" alt=\"NewSurveyIcon.png\">&nbsp;to open the&nbsp;<strong>Variable Details<\/strong>&nbsp;window to create a new variable. This depends on the response selected.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Code <\/strong>is used in analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Label <\/strong>is displayed in tables, charts and clouds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>values <\/strong>are filter expressions or calculations that can reference a variable or case.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Counts <\/strong>shows a count of the data. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click Save&nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/saveicon-png-13.png\" alt=\"SaveIcon.png\">&nbsp;to save the changes and return to the&nbsp;<strong>Variables&nbsp;<\/strong>window. Alternatively, click Cancel <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"23\" height=\"23\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/tempsnip-png.png\" alt=\"tempsnip.png\">&nbsp;to abandon any changes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You can update the response count <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" class=\"wp-image-6214\" style=\"width: 26px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/countresponsesicon-png.png\" alt=\"CountResponsesIcon.PNG\"> to see how many responses belong to each code. This is a good method to test a derived variable works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Literal responses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can set up derived variables that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/categorising-literal-responses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">categorise questions that contain literal responses<\/a>, such as comments or entries for other items not in the list. We recommend creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/creating-list-of-literal-responses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of comments<\/a> from the question before creating a derived variable. This gives you an indication of what words you wish the derived variable to look up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Derived variables in Tables, Charts and Clouds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use derived variables in the same way as any standard variable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derived variables can be drag and dropped from the variable list or typed into the Analysis field. This can be used in a table, chart or cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Combining categories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grid questions that have a number of columns ranging from negative to<br>positive can be combined into categories, such as positive, neutral and negative that can be used in tables and charts. An example of this is available in the tutorial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/create-chart-of-positive-responses-rating-scale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Create a chart of positive responses to rating scale questions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quantity responses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Quantity response questions are used to collect open ended numeric responses in a survey. This<br>type of data would usually be values such as amounts of money, volumes, areas. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/analysing-quantity-responses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analyse the quantity responses<\/a> in tables and charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/categorising-quantity-responses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dividing the values up into value ranges<\/a> helps summarise the quantity data in categories. For example, the amount spent in the shop can be divided up into categories of \u00a30-\u00a34.99, \u00a35 to \u00a39.99, and so on. A Statistics table can help find the range of data you have, helping in deciding your categories. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/banding-quantity-variables-for-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Banding quantity variables for analysis<\/a> can be used in a chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For quantity data a table of descriptive statistics can be produced which shows the mean, mode,<br>median, quartiles, sum, min, max, range, standard deviation, variance, standard error of the<br>mean, skewness, and kurtosis. Any of the statistics can be included using the Descriptive<br>Statistics tab, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/calculating-mean-scores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Calculating mean scores after banding a quantity variable.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Date responses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Date questions and variables can be used to record any date between 6 million years BC and 6<br>million years AD using the Gregorian calendar. They correctly allow for the inclusion of leap years<br>and for the specification of 4 digit years as two-digit numbers (e.g., 2021 can be expressed as 21).<br>Years before 1930 and after 2029 must be entered in full. Dates can be <a href=\"http:\/\/Analysing date responses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysed<\/a> and filtered in a<br>number of ways as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dates can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/categorising-date-responses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grouped into specified ranges<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dates can be categorised as falling into particular years, months, or weeks of the year, or on<br>particular days of the week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The difference between two dates (for example between a start date and an end date) can<br>be calculated as a number of days and grouped into appropriate ranges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time responses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Time questions refer to time of day, such as 2pm or 11.00. They do not refer to time periods, such as 1 hour or 30 minutes. However, differences between two time variables will produce a duration in seconds which can be treated as a numeric variable. Time questions enable respondents to give a specific time either in the 12 or 24 hour clock format: 7 am or 6pm or 18.00 or 11 o\u2019clock am or 3 o\u2019clock pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time variables can be filtered and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/analysing-time-responses\/\">analysed<\/a> in a number of ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/categorising-time-responses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Times can be categorised<\/a> as falling into particular periods in the day, such as \u2018rush hour\u2019; \u2018midmorning peak\u2019 or \u2018lunchtime\u2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snapxmp\/snapxmp\/calculating-time-minutes-time-variables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The difference between two times<\/a> (for example between a time of arrival and a time of departure) can be calculated and the totals grouped into appropriate ranges, such as \u201815 minutes waiting time\u2019;\u201930 minutes waiting time\u2019 and \u20181 hour waiting time\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Derived Variables enable you to transform data into new variable types, by combining other variables, including question responses, derived variables and system variables.
