In Snap XMP Desktop, you can create multilingual survey. There are a number of ways to translate your survey, one of which is to use an external translator to create a language translation file that you can import into the survey.

    Importing the language translation file

Before importing the translation, check your translated text file to make sure it has the same number of lines as the original, and all the lines in capitals are the same as in the original file.

For the import you will need both the original exported file and the translated file.

    1. Open the questionnaire in the Questionnaire design window. When you import the translated file this creates a new language edition of your questionnaire.
    QuestEng.PNG
    1. Select File|Translation to open the Translation Wizard dialog.
    2. Select Apply External Translation in the Action drop-down and click Next.

    1. Select the original language as the Reference Language. This is English in our English to Spanish example.
    Translation5.PNG
    1. Set the File name for the Reference Language to the survey exported file
    2. Select Add Language as the translation language. This adds a new language edition to your questionnaire. (If you already have the correct language in your questionnaire, just select it in the list.)
    DefineLang.PNG
    1. The Define Language dialog opens. Set the language name in the Name list and click OK.
    Translation6.PNG
    1. Set the File name for the Translation language to the translated text file.
    2. Click Start.
    3. When the translation import finishes, you will see a report window. This shows the report on a question with numerals, where the numbers are the same in both languages. If you want to keep a copy of the report, click Send To to save it to a file.
    4. Click OK to clear the window.
    5. This adds the translated language to your questionnaire. Click on the new edition tab to display it. By default, a language question is inserted at the beginning of the questionnaire, allowing the respondent to select the language they would like to use. You can edit this language question.

Respondents may want to complete your questionnaire using different types of device, such as laptop, mobile phone or on paper. In Snap XMP Desktop, you can create different versions, or publication, of the questionnaire for each publication medium. Each edition of the questionnaire contains the same questions but you can change the appearance of the questions to suit each edition.

    Adding an edition

    1. In Snap XMP Desktop, open the survey in the Survey Overview window. This opens the questionnaire in the Questionnaire window.

    3. Select Copy Style from then select an edition already in the questionnaire that you want to copy the styles from, or select Load Style to select a template to load styles from.
    4. Click OK. The editions list shows the new edition of the questionnaire.
    5. Click OK to return to the Questionnaire window.
    1. If you have multiple languages in your questionnaire, the new edition will have a tab for each language.

Laying out the questionnaires for different devices

The editions can differ in the way they look and the way they are laid out, but their variables, routing and the publishing settings must remain the same. The publishing settings include the interview, paradata and data link settings.

You can choose to show or hide different items in the different editions. This allows you to tailor the text and images according to the device or paper size. Including extra page breaks helps to reduce scrolling on small screens.

Making the following changes helps to improve the experience on small screens and mobile devices

    • Keep the text of questions and the codes as brief as possible.
    • Change large grid questions to display as Carousels or split large grid questions into several smaller grids.

    Showing and hiding questions

If you want to have less text in one edition of your survey, you can provide different versions of the text, and show the one that is appropriate for that edition.

    1. Create the different instructions or questions.
    2. Right-click the item you wish to hide and select Hide Variable in the dropdown list.
Question that is hidden in the selected edition
    1. Change to the other editions by selecting the appropriate tab at the bottom of the screen.

Email alerts are emails sent out, to a specific email address, when the submitted response includes a particular answer or set of answers. For example, you could send an alert to the sales team when a customer requests a brochure, as part of the survey.

You can enhance your project using the email alert feature, which is available in the Snap XMP Desktop app.

    Information you will need

Before you set up the email alert you will need:

    • The email address that you want to sent the email alert to, such as, the sales team.
    • The text of the email, which can include information from the response.
    • The conditions that trigger an email alert, such as, the customer has requested the brochure.
    • The email format, which can include plain text or HTML format. HTML emails let you include text formatting and variable fields, whereas plain text improves accessibility.

    Open the questionnaire

    1. Click Survey Overview SurveyOverviewIcon.png on the Snap XMP Desktop toolbar. This opens the Survey Overview window.
    2. Select Online surveys 5.OnlineSurveysIcon.png to show all the online surveys available.
    3. For an online survey, click > to expand the folder containing the survey, if required.
    1. When you have found the survey, double click on the survey name to open the survey. Alternatively click on the survey name once to highlight it and then click EditSurveyIcon.png or press Enter to open the survey.
    2. This opens the Survey Details dialog, which shows the name, title and other notes for the survey. The survey name cannot be changed but the Title and comments can be edited, if required.
    1. Click OK. The Survey Overview window closes and, by default, the questionnaire opens in the Questionnaire window. You can now edit the questionnaire.

    Create an email alert

    1. In the Questionnaire window, click Questionnaire Properties QuestionnairePropsIcon.png  on the toolbar. This opens the Questionnaire Properties dialog.
    2. Select Alerts in the Section panel to display the email alerts.
    QP-CreateAlert1.PNG
    1. Click the New button to create a new alert. This opens the Email Alert dialog.
    QP-CreateAlert2.PNG

    Add the alert condition

The condition is the rule that must be satisfied in order to trigger the alert and send the email. The rules are written as expressions which are either true or false. For example, Q10 = 1, which is true if the respondent has selected the first answer in a single choice question, named Q10.

    Enable or disable the alert

The Enabled checkbox determines if the email alert is active or not. Enabled is selected, by default, meaning that the email alert is active.

If you wish to disable the alert, clear the Enabled checkbox. The email alert will not send an email when it is disabled.

    Create the alert message

    1. Select the use HTML box to use HTML formatting, including font type, style and colour, or any HTML code.
    2. In To, enter the address of the person who will receive the email. If you wish to send to multiple recipients, separate each email address with a semi-colon. You can also use the Insert button to insert an email address variable from the questionnaire, allowing the alert to dynamically populate the email address using text substitution. In this way, the respondent could receive an email alert confirming their response submission. The field will show the variable in curly brackets {}.
    3. In From name, enter the sender name for the email.
    4. In Subject, enter the subject of your email in the Subject field.
    5. Enter the content of the email. You can use the Insert button to insert variable fields from the questionnaire (for example, the date, site, etc) in the email body as well as the To, From name and Subject fields. If you insert the answer for a coded question it will display the appropriate answer label. The variable field has curly brackets {} to show that it is a variable.
